The Tarka Child Contact Centre was established in 2008, to offer Supported Contact and a Handover facility in the Bideford, Torridge, and North Devon area.

We are a registered Charity, offering this service for free, to all families who are having trouble with Contact arrangements.

The Charity is managed by a Committee, made up of volunteer managers with representatives from Family Law, CAFCASS and Child Protection.

The Centre is operated by a Co-ordinator and a team of trained volunteers, who work to a strict Confidentiality Policy and undergo DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) checks.

What is Supported Contact?

TCCC offers a handover facility which enables the child to be removed from anxieties which may arise if the parents were to meet.  Staggered entry and leaving times are arranged with the resident parent using a waiting room, and the staff or volunteers then handing the child to the non-resident parent.  If pre-arranged, the non-resident parent can also take the child out of the Centre for the duration of the visit, bringing them back to the Centre at the end of the session.

What is Handover?

Supported contact enables children to develop and maintain positive relationships with their non-resident parent and other family members.

TCCC is suitable for families where no significant risk to the child, or those around the child, has been identified.

The basic elements of Supported contact are as follows:

Staff and volunteers are available for assistance, but there is no close observation, monitoring, or reporting of an individual's contact.

Several families are usually together in one or a few rooms.

Encouragement for families to develop mutual trust.

No detailed reports made unless there is a risk of harm.
